Step-by-Step Washing Instructions for Maximum Durability
Follow these steps to keep your hoodie looking like new. I’ve tested these with our own S-Town samples, and they work.
Step 1: Turn It Inside Out
Before washing, turn your hoodie inside out. This protects the outer fabric and print from friction against other clothes or the drum. Pro tip: zip up any zippers and button any snaps to prevent snagging.
Step 2: Use Cold Water and Gentle Cycle
Hot water shrinks cotton and fades dyes. Always select cold water (below 80°F). The gentle cycle reduces agitation, which is the main cause of pilling and seam stress. Add a teaspoon of salt to the wash to help set dark colors - a trick I learned from apparel makers.
Step 3: Choose a Mild Detergent
Avoid bleach, fabric softeners, and brighteners. They break down fibers and leave residue that traps odor. Use a small amount of liquid detergent (about 1 tablespoon) - more is not better. For extra freshness, add 1/4 cup of white vinegar to the rinse cycle. It neutralizes odors without damaging fabric.
Step 4: Wash with Similar Colors and Weights
Don’t throw your hoodie in with a load of jeans or towels. The abrasive friction causes pilling. Wash with other cotton or fleece garments of similar color. I recommend washing your S-Town hoodie separately or with no more than two other items.
Step 5: Skip the Extra Rinse (for Most Cases)
An extra rinse cycle may remove residue, but it also adds agitation. If you use the right amount of detergent, a single rinse is fine. Only use extra rinse if you suspect detergent buildup (check for white streaks after drying).
